TravisMathew tee shirts adorned by Dave Hobrecht feature the third hole at Monarch Beach
Upon arrival, it’s obvious that Monarch Beach Golf Links is one of the top-rated golf clubs in Southern California, and no place on the property illustrates this fact quite like the third hole. As a tip-of-the-hat to this oceanside beauty, Monarch Beach enlisted the help of nearby Laguna Beach artist Dave Hobrecht (https://hobrecht.com/) to capture No. 3 with one of his unique charcoal-style creations.

The canvases are TravisMathew (https://www.travismathew.com/) tee shirts displaying Hobrecht’s handiwork on top of three color options – white, black and grey. These distinctive tees are on sale in the golf shop for $55 as well as the original artwork laid out on high-quality archival canvas (20: X 28”) for $200 (10% off for members). Plus, they’ll throw in the frame for an additional $75 ($50 for members).
Dave Hobrecht’s Story (https://hobrecht.com/pages/about-the-artist-1)
Hobrecht’s extraordinary story begins with a not-so pleasant start. An aspiring athlete, his dreams were shattered – along with his legs – in a terrible car accident at 13 years old. However, like a true champion, he turned tragedy into triumph, adversity into advantage by expressing his love for sports as an artist instead of an athlete.
Since then, he’s become renowned for his black and white sports paintings featuring many of the greats such as Arnold Palmer, Derek Jeter, Cal Ripken, Clayton Kershaw, Tony Hawk and many more. Clicking through his website (https://hobrecht.com/) is like taking a trip to the Hall of Fame – all of them!
The unmistakable Southern California coastal culture surrounding the red-hot TravisMathew brand dovetails – or duck dives – with the vibe at Monarch Beach Golf Links. In fact, their headquarters are located just a few breaks up the coast in Huntington Beach. Tour players sporting their duds include Keegan Bradley, Stuart Appleby and Si Woo Kim, among others. And tennis stars James Blake and Marty Fish are also devotees along with pro surfer Casey Brown.
Eric Lohman’s Take
“The third hole fits the unique Southern California lifestyle – the sunsets, waves rolling in, people surfing and having a great time on the beach,” said Eric Lohman, General Manager of Monarch Beach Golf Links. “Dave’s rendition captures this vibe in a unique, stylistic way. And in general, tee shirt design has really evolved in recent years to, in many cases, make a statement. This one says ‘Southern California.’”
Indeed, the artwork’s dreamy appearance coupled with the contrast of golf course, beach, ocean and sky fit SoCal to a “tee.”
